Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
